Woody Allen Film Actor And Broadway Star Passed Away

At 85 years old, Tony Roberts, the beloved actor recognized for his memorable collaborations with directors Woody Allen and Sidney Lumet, has sadly passed away.

The news was confirmed by his daughter, Nicole Barley, to The New York Times. Tony breathed his last on a Friday, comfortably at his home in Manhattan, succumbing to complications from lung cancer. Nicole remains his sole surviving family member.

Tony Roberts was born on October 22, 1939, in the heart of New York City. His career was nothing short of remarkable, traversing through the realms of stage, films, and the silver screen of television.

After earning his degree from Northwestern University, Tony first gained fame on Broadway—a stepping stone that led him to the cinematic universe.

Audiences and critics alike lauded his roles in Woody Allen classics such as Annie Hall (1977), Play It Again, Sam (1972), Manhattan (1979), and A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy (1982). His witty humor and natural charisma made him an iconic figure in Allen’s unique neurotic comedies, usually playing the witty and good-natured best friend.

Not just a film legend, Tony Roberts was also a titan on the stage. He earned prestigious Tony Award nominations for his captivating performances in plays like How Now, Dow Jones (1968) and Play It Again, Sam (1969). Broadway audiences experienced his brilliance in productions such as Barefoot in the Park and Victor/Victoria, where he shared the stage with legendary performers like Julie Andrews.

Tony’s rich, commanding voice extended beyond the stage and screen, making him a sought-after figure in the world of voiceovers. He narrated numerous audiobooks and became the familiar voice behind various commercials, leaving a lasting auditory legacy. Despite his extensive professional achievements and fame, Tony remained a private individual, preferring to focus on his passion for acting rather than the allure of Hollywood celebrity.

His passing leaves a void in the hearts of many fans and peers, but his legacy lives on through the memorable performances he delivered over the years. With each role, he brought characters to life, leaving an indelible imprint on both cinema and theater. Tony Roberts will be fondly remembered by those who cherished his work, as his on-screen charisma and stage presence continue to inspire actors and entertain fans for generations to come.

Rest In Peace, Tony Roberts. Your contributions to the world of art and entertainment will forever be cherished and remembered.
