Past Presidents’ Physicals: What We Know So Far

CNN looked at old records from physical exams that were done on former presidents. Most of the time, these reports have basic details like blood pressure, height, and weight. They also talk about things like how Obama’s doctor took off a skin tag, how Bush’s doctor drained a cyst on Bush’s finger, and how Ford’s doctor pushed for a swimming pool at the White House.

Candidates for president don’t have to talk about the results of their medical exam, but Jackson did so during a meeting on Tuesday and said on Friday that Trump was in “excellent health.”

Based on the tests they took, here is a look at how healthy past leaders were.

That January, Ford’s doctor told him, “I’m happy to say he’s in great health.” Every single one of the medical tests came back normal.

Ford had another check-up in July 1976. At this visit, his doctor said, “He hasn’t had any complaints… other than mild pain in his knee after standing for long periods of time.” The President has kept up his physical ability to work long hours. He continues to eat right and sleep well. His weight is between 195 and 198 pounds.

In 1975, Ford’s doctor wrote, “When the new White House swimming pool is finished, he will have short breaks to relax that are easy to fit into his busy schedule.”

“I’d like to take a moment to thank the people whose donations make it possible for the President to have a swimming pool in the White House,” Dr. William Lukash said at a 1972 press conference. To add to that, I should say that the President didn’t want to use the pool in the winter because he wanted to save energy. I talked to him about this, and I thought it would be good for him to be able to use this pool because I thought it would make him feel better and help him feel better the next day. … The President swims about 24 lengths of the pool, which is about a quarter of a mile. It takes him about 14 minutes to do this.

From 1981 to 1989, he was Ronald Reagan

They said in a statement that Bush had a sebaceous cyst on the third finger of his left hand drained. The President has a Band-Aid on his finger, but he will be able to take it off in a few hours. This cyst has been there for a long time and doesn’t cause any health issues.

Reagan was checked out by 14 experts in October 1981 and told by the White House doctor that he was “in excellent health.” He also said that the president had “fully recovered” from the gunshot wounds he got in March 1981 when someone tried to kill him.

Nixon had another checkup in May 1984. This time, his doctor said he was in “very exceptional physical condition.” The doctors did find a small polyp in his colon. They took it out and found that it was safe. During the president’s checkups in 1985 and 1988, similar polyps were found and taken out. Reagan’s tests this year were “entirely normal” other than that.

In March 1985, President Reagan was getting checked out. The doctor at the White House told the doctor, “President Reagan continues to enjoy good health.” His mental and physical health are both very good. His blood pressure is lower than it was a year ago, which really impresses me.

As of December 1988, Reagan was still in office and had not taken an exam since. The president’s doctor said that his health was “remarkable.”

From 1989 to 1993, George H. W. Bush

Bush was checked out in 1989 and was said to be in “extremely sound physical condition.” It was fine for the X-rays, EKG, urinalysis, blood test, allergy test, and dermatological check. He did have “mild degenerative osteoarthritis” in his hips, and it had been there for a while.

In office from 1993 to 2001, President Bill Clinton

When Clinton got his health checked in 1997, he said he had trouble hearing people when they were talking in groups. After a hearing test, the 42nd president was also given hearing aids. A healthy cyst was also taken out of the left side of his chest. The doctors said it looked like one that had been taken out of his nose the previous year. He worked out more and ate better, which helped him lose 20 pounds, which Clinton said was partly because of his new lifestyle.

Dr. Connie Mariano, the presidential doctor in 2001, said that during a physical exam, a sore on his back that looked like skin cancer was cut out. The results of the pathology test showed that the growth was a superficial basal cell skin cancer. Pathologists said that the edges of the legion looked “clean,” which means that the lesion was completely gone.

Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta talked about ways to stop and maybe even reverse heart disease in the 2011 CNN special called “The Last Heart Attack.” Hillary Clinton told Gupta the truth about his own wake-up call, which was surgery in 2004 to remove four arteries. In 2010, she also had heart surgery.

He told Gupta, “I was lucky I didn’t die of a heart attack.”

She stopped eating meat, cheese, and eggs in 2010 and became a vegan.

President George W. Bush was in office from 2001 to 2009.

A letter from 2001 that sums up George W. Bush’s health exam lists the 12 doctors who checked on the president. His exam was looked over by two more doctors, one of whom has worked as a White House doctor for a long time and is known as Dr. Richard J. Tubb.

The report says Bush has “a history of activity and sports-related injuries.” Bodily polyps were taken out of his colon in 1998 and 1999. He had “mild high frequency hearing loss,” but his speech frequency hearing was “excellent.”

We were also told that the president smoked “an occasional cigar” and drank diet soda and coffee. He also said that year that he ran “about three miles four times a week on average” and did other exercises like swimming, lifting weights, and using the elliptical.

“The President is in the top 2% of men his age in cardiovascular fitness,” the report says. At this level of fitness, he would be in the Excellent group for men 40 to 44 years old and the Superior group for men 45 and older. He has a very low risk of coronary heart disease.

First Lady Michelle Obama, from 2009 to 2017

Obama had four physicals that were recorded while he was president. They were in 2016, 2014, 2011, and 2010. For each report, the president’s doctor wrote a note and sent it to the acting White House press secretary.

All of the president’s vital signs are in a healthy range, as Obama wrote in his letters. Also, they briefly talk about all of his major body systems and some parts, like the head, ears, nose, and throat. A PSA test for prostate cancer was one of the tests that came back negative. Because African American men have a high risk of getting cancer, the American Cancer Society suggests that they get this test when they are 45 years old.

Obama talked about the medicines he is taking in all four of his reports. In the same year, the president was told to take vitamin D every day, Nexium “as needed for occasional acid reflux symptoms,” nicotine gum (as needed for ongoing attempts to quit smoking), and Malarone “as indicated during global travel to malaria-endemic areas.”

From 2017 to 2021, Donald Trump

A report that said former President Donald Trump had “exceptional” mental health was shared by him. This wasn’t really a joke; it was a dig at Joe Biden on his 81st birthday.

The note, which was signed by Trump’s personal doctor, is mostly good and doesn’t go into a lot of detail. It says that Trump’s overall health is “excellent” and that he did “exceptionally” on tests of his brainpower.

It also says that Trump has “lost weight by eating better and continuing to work out every day.” His “laboratory analysis” came back better than other tests because of this, so the story goes. But it doesn’t say anything about specific metrics.

Trump said in August that he was 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighed 215 pounds. Some on social media said those numbers were the same as Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson’s, even though Jackson is only 6’2″ taller.

A checkup for the president in 2019 showed that Trump weighed 243 pounds. His doctor told him at the time that he was “very healthy” in general, but that he was overweight.

It’s been a long time since anyone has checked on the 77-year-old’s health. Trump used the issue to attack Hilary Clinton, who was running for president as a Democrat at the time. He said Clinton didn’t have the “stamina” to do her job.

Many mistakes in medicine and what look like attempts to trick people have only made things worse.

Trump’s doctor told him in 2015 that he would be “the healthiest person ever elected to the presidency.” In the end, the doctor said that the note was written by the patient.

In 2020, some people didn’t trust Trump’s doctors because they gave them conflicting or missing information about the coronavirus illness that the president had. This information quickly spread.

In the same year, Trump took a test of dementia that he said was an intelligence test and did very well on it. This made headlines for days. He said the questions were about picking out an elephant and saying over and over, “Person. Woman. Man. Camera. TV.”

How important is the fact that Biden is younger than Trump? We asked people over 60 to vote.

As Trump tries to become the Republican candidate for president in 2024, he has often said bad things about Biden’s mental health, calling him a senile puppet that his staff holds up.

Many polls show that a lot of people agree with them.

This makes it look like Trump’s team released the good medical report on his birthday, even though the report itself says that Trump’s most recent “comprehensive examination” was on September 13.

The last time Biden got checked out, in February 2023, it was good to see that he was healthy. However, his falls and stumbling still make national news.
