Johnny Mathis Announces Retirement Due to Health Concerns

Legendary Singer Bids Farewell to the Stage

Beloved music legend Johnny Mathis, at the age of 89, has decided to step back from performing. He is retiring due to health concerns, specifically age-related memory loss. Despite his retirement, his Voice of Romance tour will continue as planned until the spring of this year. You can catch his final performance on May 18 at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey.

Sadly, for those hoping to see Mathis live after this spring, his team has confirmed that all performances scheduled beyond June 2025 have been canceled. “As many of you know, Johnny Mathis is nearing his 90th birthday. It is with deep regret that due to his advancing age and progressing memory concerns, we are announcing his retirement from touring and live concerts,” his team relayed.

Born on September 30, 1935, in Gilmer, Texas, Mathis was raised in San Francisco, California. He captured hearts with his smooth, romantic ballads, earning a place as one of America’s most cherished musicians. Fascinated by music from a young age, Mathis began his journey in classical music as a child before venturing into professional singing at 13.

Growing up in San Francisco, Mathis had the opportunity to connect with notable jazz musicians of the time, including the legendary Duke Ellington. Mathis held Ellington in high esteem, admiring his intellect and sophistication. Mathis once shared, “Because of his intellect, Ellington was one of my heroes… He was a stylish man, sophisticated without being pompous or arrogant, and his music absolutely sounded like he looked.”

A Trailblazer in Pop Music

In 1957, Mathis released two major hits, Chances Are and It’s Not for Me to Say, marking his place in pop music history. That year also saw the release of his album Johnny’s Greatest Hits, which topped the Billboard charts for an astounding 490 weeks. This remarkable period marked the beginning of a flourishing career.

Throughout his career, Mathis made exceptional contributions to the music industry, releasing over 70 albums and achieving sales of over 350 million albums worldwide. His popular tracks like Wonderful! Wonderful!, The Twelfth of Never, along with his festive holiday albums, are forever tied to feelings of love and nostalgia. For his gentle and soothing voice, Mathis was affectionately named “The Voice of Romance.”

Honors and Legacy

Johnny Mathis has had an incredible and rewarding career. Not only has he achieved commercial success, but he has also been celebrated with numerous accolades. In 2003, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Awards. Additionally, Mathis has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and is an inductee of the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame.

Though it is a poignant moment as Mathis steps away from the spotlight, his influence and legacy in music will endure for generations to come. His timeless voice and the memories he created will continue to inspire both fans and aspiring musicians alike.
