Melania Trump’s Little-Known Dating Past Comes to Light

Before stepping into the role of First Lady with such grace and composure, Melania Trump led a pretty private life, including a handful of romances that stayed out of the spotlight. Not many details have surfaced over the years, but some stories from her earlier days have trickled out.

She was born Melanija Knavs in the small Slovenian town of Sevnica, and her path to fame was far from predictable. Way before tying the knot with Donald Trump in 2005, she poured everything into her modeling dreams, starting in Ljubljana and then heading to fashion hubs like Paris, Milan, and finally New York. 6 “Sevnica, the quiet Slovenian town where Melania grew up” “LARGE”

How Melania and Donald First Connected

Their story began back in 1998 at a Fashion Week bash at New York’s Kit Kat Club, thrown by Paolo Zampolli, the modeling agent who’d brought her on board at ID Model Management.

Donald showed up with someone else, but he couldn’t take his eyes off Melania and asked for her number. Her close friend Edit Molnar later shared with the New York Post that Melania wasn’t impressed at first—she saw him arriving with a date and flat-out refused. “He’s here with a woman. No way am I giving him my number,” she apparently said. Molnar called her a real homebody who wouldn’t budge. In the end, Donald persisted and won her over.

Zampolli, who’s since become a U.S. ambassador, backed that up: Melania wasn’t dating anyone in New York before Donald. She’d just go to the movies alone or hit the gym. “Here was this woman posing on a giant Camel billboard in Times Square, but she basically stayed in every night,” he said. Definitely not the partying type.

They went on to marry in a stunning ceremony at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach in January 2005, and their son Barron arrived the next year. 3 “Melania and Donald on their wedding day at Mar-a-Lago” “LARGE”

Her Reported First Teenage Romance

One of the earliest names linked to Melania is Peter Butoln, who says he was her boyfriend back in her school days in Slovenia. In an Inside Edition interview, he called it his “first love—my first real love.”

He remembers spotting her among a group of girls when she moved to Ljubljana at 17 for design school. “She stood out as the most beautiful one,” he said.

Things ended when he headed off for military service, and the last he heard from her was a postcard in 1987 wishing him “nice warm regards from the seaside.”

That said, a spokesperson for Melania pushed back on the story, insisting Peter was never officially her boyfriend.

Her Final Romance Back in Slovenia

Then there’s Jure Zorcic, who crossed paths with her in 1991. He was on his motorcycle when he saw her walking and immediately turned around. “Wow, who’s this girl? She’s stunning,” he thought, as he told ABC News. It felt straight out of a movie.

They grabbed coffee, hit it off, and dated for a few months, even vacationing with friends on the Croatian coast.

Eventually, she left for modeling gigs in Milan and Paris. “She was really something special,” Jure said.

They ran into each other again in New York in 2000, and she spoke to him in English. He joked, “Have you forgotten you’re Slovenian?” She explained she was splitting time between New York and Florida and had no plans to return home.

Looking back on her life with Donald, Jure figured it was meant to be. “No one could’ve imagined back then that she’d end up living the high life on Fifth Avenue in Trump Tower—not even her!”

From Humble Beginnings to the Spotlight

After that 1998 meeting with Donald, Melania’s world changed dramatically, trading quiet modeling days for intense public attention.

Even early on, she was vocal about admiring him. In a 1999 ABC News chat, she said he’d make an excellent president: “He’s sharp, great at business, and he’d be a strong leader.”

Donald was just flirting with the idea of running back then, but Melania already saw his potential—and she was determined to show the world she was far more than just arm candy.
